Barbara and Karen met in Lawrence, Kansas in 1981. Karen was a young legal clinic lawyer at the law school and Barbara was a biology graduate student. Once Barbara graduated she was offered a job at UC Berkeley and Karen was working for a law firm that transferred her to the Bay Area. They lived in the Bay Area until Karen went to work as a civilian lawyer for the Department of the Navy and got a job assignment in Italy for three years. Barbara took a leave of absence from her job for one year to join Karen in Italy, and for the rest of the 3 years they met in places like Copenhagen, Paris, or New York to argue about where they would live next. Barbara won, they returned to the Bay Area and they lived there until they both made job changes to come to Seattle in 1999. They have lived in Seattle since. They are very into kayaking and biking, which has been the impetus for a number of their trips in the US and abroad.
