Two quiet introverts relaxing at home in their apartments across town from one another. Neither one fond of the bar scene, and tending to avoid crowds. How are two such people in a rainy city with a population of just over 600,000 supposed to meet each other and fall in love? Well thank goodness it was 2009 and online dating is the best way for two nerds to meet just the right person!
Both had friends who’d found their spouses online. With this incentive they each decided separately it was time. One rainy October night, Ben got an email from Christine. She loved dogs, and she called Ben a ‘fellow introvert’ which meant she was interested and observant enough to pick that out despite my best efforts to portray myself as the suave, outgoing type. Also, Christine didn’t have any typos in her email so I knew things were off to a good start.
After emailing back and forth for a few days Ben readied himself to ask for the first date… But Christine beat him to the punch! Their date was great and conversation flowed. The most important thing that came away from that night was they wanted to get to know each other better. A year later, for their one year anniversary, they decided to go back to Jazz Alley. Ben had decided to propose over intermission but discovered three hours later, there was no intermission. Finally, the show ended and after what seemed like the longest encore in the world, at a small, cozy, table lit by candlelight he made his move. He held Christine’s hand gently and told her how amazing the last year had been and how he’d never loved anyone so much in my entire life. He told her he knew for a long time she was the person he wanted to be with, reached in my coat pocket and asked her to be my wife. Ben proposed with his grandmother’s ring. The rest is history…
One fun thing Christine and Ben did the day before their wedding was to have everyone play Whirlyball! I was invited to play with them which was super fun! It was a great way to get to meet everyone and all their friends to spend some time together before the wedding. There are a few photos below I took with my fancy point and shoot camera!
