How Long Does A Photoshoot Take?

The short answer to how long a photoshoot take is there is no set amount of time it can take, and too many variables can change based on the type of photoshoot and what the client wants. Luckily for you, we have broken down the main photoshoot types and their variables to give you a rough idea of what to expect.

Variables That Can Affect A Photoshoot’s Length

When it comes to photoshoots, there will always be different variables that can affect how long they take. Here are some of the most common variables:

  • Unexpected weather like rain
  • Children refusing to sit still
  • A pet does not want to stay in place long enough for a picture

Every photoshoot is different, but professional photographers know how to deal with problems that may come up. Whether it is a child at a family shoot that is having trouble sitting still, or a sudden rainstorm sending everyone back inside, trust your photographer to be prepared for such situations.

Wedding Photoshoot

The big day has come, and you are finally getting married to the person you love. Everyone needs a professional photoshoot for their wedding, but you want to know how long it will take. On average, without any major problems arising, a wedding portrait session will last between 30 – 45 minutes.

However, on top of that, there are usually family wedding photos that can take another 60 minutes and the couple’s photos take around 45 minutes. All in all, you can expect around two hours of total wedding portraits.

Family Photoshoot

Taking photos of your family can be stressful sometimes, especially if your children are not in the mood for photos and may not want to sit or stand still for photos or refuse to take them. Assuming everything goes smoothly, a family portrait session takes between 45 – 60 minutes on average.

Child Photoshoot

Child portrait sessions are a little harder to set time on because children can not sit or stand still as long as adults. We recommend making sure your children are napped and fed beforehand, and we’ll offer breaks and snacks as needed to help your child get through the session.

Pet Photoshoot

Pet portrait sessions may be challenging. A lot of time is spent getting them to sit still where you want the photos taken so that they can last, on average, between 60 – 90 minutes. To ensure success, bring your pet’s favorite treats and toys to give them something to focus on.

While there are many different types of portrait sessions, they only take between 30 – 90 minutes on average. However, remember that problems may arise during your photoshoot, so be sure to talk to your photographer about preparing for things. No matter the flavor of a photoshoot, you can feel comfortable with the skills of Dani Weiss.
