How a Photographer Should Capture Life During the Coronavirus

Since we are all sheltering in place, photographers have had to come up with some new ideas to make things both safe and fun for their clients. Since our event photography has gone away, it is up to us to try and create opportunities to work with our clients. It is also very important for everyone to stay safe during this process.

1. Set the Location

Set the location outside when the light is the best possible. Avoiding full sunlight is essential. You do not want to have your clients squinting. Fill flash will help during difficult lighting situations.

2. Communicate Early

Be sure to communicate clearly with your clients so you do not have to come in close contact with them. Texting when you arrive or telling them to be ready and looking out a window is helpful to assure there is no physical contact made.

3. Consider Porch Portraits

Making porch portraits, assuming you have one, is a whole lot of fun. Social distancing is easy as photographers can back up and use a longer lens to create these images.

4. Backyards Can Be Great

If you do not have a porch, using a back or side yard is also a good idea. Just be sure to choose a time that works best with the light.

5. Use Props

Be sure to have your clients consider different props or clothing choices. Do you want it to be silly, dressy or both?

6. Include Your Pets

Be sure to include family pets. They can be a fun addition to any photoshoot.

7. Stay Safe

Wash your hands, don’t touch your face and regularly clean your camera gear.

8. Keep Being Positive

Making our shoots as fun as we can will allow us to remember 2020. Even if it has been a complete mess, we will have something positive we can look back on to remember.
